Delivering clean power to Surrey Sports Park
As part of SSE Energy Solutions strategic energy partnership with the University of Surrey, we have delivered a major rooftop solar project at Surrey Sports Park.
From its energisation in early August 2025, over 1500 solar panels are generating clean, home-grown electricity, supplying more than 25% of the Sports Park’s annual energy needs. The system will produce around 728MWh each year, significantly reducing carbon emissions and helping the University move closer to its ambitious net zero 2030 target.
A partnership for sustainable energy
This project is part of a strategic partnership between SSE Energy Solutions and the University of Surrey. The University’s sustainable leadership alongside our Behind-the-Meter solar expertise, has enabled us to design, develop and deliver a system that maximises the renewable potential of the building.
This is a positive milestone in our strategic partnership with the University of Surrey, and a clear demonstration of how collaboration with businesses can deliver real progress towards net zero. Together, we’re not only decarbonising University grounds, but helping contribute to the Government’s target of 45-47GW of installed solar capacity by 2030.
Supporting the renewable transition
This installation is part of the University’s 8-point plan to cut energy use, decarbonise supply, and encourage sustainable behaviour. A larger pipeline of projects is already in development, including ground-mounted solar and canopy solar over main carparks, all of which will accelerate the University’s shift to renewable energy.
By localising their renewable assets and integrating renewable generation directly on site, the University is:
· Reducing reliance on fossil fuels
· Cutting operational carbon emissions
· Building resilience against rising energy costs
SSE Energy Solutions is proud to help the University of Surrey take another significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future – proving that local action can make a global impact.
