Surrey County Cricket Club and SSE Energy Solutions work to create sustainability leaders of tomorrow
Surrey County Cricket Club (SCCC) have joined forces with long-term partner SSE Energy Solutions to empower local schoolchildren to become sustainability champions.
The year-long sustainability education programme, called ‘The Green Wicket Project’ will be delivered at the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre at the Kia Oval for the first time during the 2025/26 academic year blending sustainability education with technology skills and creative storytelling.
18 students from 2 schools will explore key themes such as biodiversity, the impact of AI on climate solutions as well as a stadium tour of the Kia Oval to understand how Surrey CCC and SSE Energy Solutions are working towards reducing carbon emissions at the venue.
Industry experts from the SSE Energy Solutions Sustainability team will speak to the students throughout the year, sharing expert insights into renewable energy and the company’s role in the transition to a net zero future. These sessions will offer students a valuable real-world perspective on sustainability and inspire them to think critically about their own environmental impact, in a practical and relatable manner.
The final showcase of each term will feature student-created videos, to celebrate the students’ achievements and demonstrate the power of community-driven education in inspiring climate awareness and action.
SSE Energy Solutions believes that educating the next generation is vital to achieving a more sustainable future. By supporting the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre’s programme, we’re investing in the future - equipping Year 6 students with the tools to understand climate challenges and the confidence to be part of the solution in the future. These young minds are tomorrow’s innovators, leaders, and changemakers. Our involvement reflects our commitment to thought leadership in the community and our belief that meaningful progress begins with empowering the next generation.
This programme is about more than just teaching sustainability - it’s about inspiring Year 6 students to think critically, ask questions, and see themselves as future leaders. Having a partner like SSE Energy Solutions makes a real difference. Their support not only enables us to deliver a high-quality, hands-on learning experience, but also brings real-world relevance to the classroom. When students hear directly from professionals working in renewable energy, it connects the dots between what they’re learning and the world they’re growing up in. That kind of impact is invaluable
The Ben Hollioake Learning Centre (BHLC), named in honour of Surrey cricketer Ben Hollioake, supports more than 1,000 schoolchildren from Primary Schools local to the Kia Oval every year. The BHLC programme gives the children access to state of the art computer equipment throughout the year.
Sessions see pupils taught digital skills such as coding, touch typing and audio and video editing. They also take part in cricket coaching sessions to develop their skills.
The sustainability education initiative, developed in partnership with Surrey County Cricket Club, reflects SSE Energy Solutions’ ongoing commitment to community engagement and thought leadership in sustainability. From promoting gender equality by supporting Surrey County Cricket Club’s first professional women’s team, to educating fans on match days with sustainability-led activations, their initiatives highlight the importance of building a more sustainable future for all.
