BEMS Controls Engineer Level 4 Apprenticeship

Learn to understand, control and optimise the energy usage in industrial, commercial and public buildings. Apprenticeship

What are Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS)?

BEMS are automated control systems that are implemented in buildings to monitor and control building services, such as the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). By controlling building services, BEMS enable energy-efficient control of the internal environment whilst ensuring optimum comfort conditions are maintained. ‘Smart Buildings’ are created when BEMS connect and integrate building services (e.g. HVAC) to other building services (e.g. lighting).

What is the apprenticeship?

This apprenticeship is a unique opportunity for you to join the SSE Energy Solutions Smart Buildings team. As a BEMS apprentice, you will cover the functions of building services, field devices (e.g. sensors) and different types of controls. You will gain experience in creating wiring schedules for a range of panel manufacturers.

You’ll learn to design and write software that connects building services to work together to optimise occupant comfort conditions whilst reducing energy consumption. By creating graphics, you’ll enable building users to interact with the control systems via an interface. With support from qualified engineers, you’ll complete control panel drawings before learning to install and commission such equipment.

At customer sites, you will assist engineers with the servicing and maintenance of existing BEMS installations. Once trained, you’ll carry out on site activities on BEMS equipment including fault finding, electrical testing and inspections. You will produce site survey reports along with recommendations for enhancing energy performance.

Training and Development

During the 36-month-long programme, you will receive comprehensive training which will enable you to develop personally and professionally. You will work alongside our engineering team and will receive mentored support.

Our partner, Group Horizon, will deliver the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) technical course modules BCM00 – BCM15. Following safe working practises, you’ll apply your technical knowledge on site, allowing you to improve your skills and behaviours and,,industry-accredited as a result achieve industry accredited qualifications:

  • BCIA Technical Certificate
  • BCIA Advanced Technical Certificate
  • Eligibility to apply for Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Building Controls card
