Storage Facility Exemption from BSUoS Import Charges
BSUoS charges are the cost associated with balancing the electricity transmission system. These charges are recovered from demand customers and generators based on the amount of energy imported or exported onto the network within each half hour period.
Electricity Storage providers currently pay BSUoS charges on their import and export volumes. However, this can be burdensome for storage facilities, especially since they often import more electricity than they export.
To address this, the NGESO introduced an exemption for eligible storage facilities. Effective from April 1, 2021, eligible storage facilities are exempt from BSUoS charges on their imported electricity volumes. They will only be charged for their exports.
This exemption aims to promote the deployment of electricity storage and ensure fair treatment in charging arrangements between storage and generation assets.
How to Claim the Exemption
If you operate an eligible storage facility, follow these steps to claim the exemption.
- Self-Declaration - As a facility operator, you need to self-declare that your storage facility qualifies for the exemption. This means confirming that your facility meets the criteria net by the NGESO.
- Form Submission - Submit a non-final demand form to the NGESO. This form serves as your official request for exemption from BSUoS charges on imported volumes.
- Review and Confirmation - The NGESO will review your submission and verify the eligibility of your storage facility. Once confirmed, you will receive acknowledgement of the exemption.
- Updated Billing - Going forward, your storage facility will no longer be charged BSUoS fees on imported volumes.
Remember that this exemption applies specifically to storage facilities and ensures that they pay only one set of balancing system charges.
