4,000,000 hours worked without a reportable SHE incident in SSE’s Smart Buildings (BeMS) business

During October 2019 we reached the milestone of having worked for over 4 million hours without a reportable SHE incident: more than 6 years of operational safety. We’re rightly proud of this achievement; it’s a testament to the dedication of our engineers and our operational management team that safety is taken so seriously.

Part of its Distributed Energy family, SSE Energy Solutions business designs, installs, maintains and optimises building energy management systems; and deploy energy efficiency solutions – including boiler upgrades, solar PV installations and alternative renewable energy solutions in non-domestic buildings.

We employ over 150 engineers, project and operations managers operating from 8 regional offices and we work in some of the most challenging building environments – construction sites, hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical and industrial premises. In addition to our employed engineers we work with a preferred subcontractor base that we include within our safety metrics.

We’re rightly proud of this achievement; it’s a testament to the dedication of our engineers and our operational management team that safety is taken so seriously.

We have a robust risk assessment method statement (RAMS) process which we constantly review; most recently systemising our risk assessment process so that each engineer booking now includes the data from the previous 3 engineering visits in an effort to highlight recent issues to our colleagues.

Safety features highly in Energy Solutions. As well as incident and near miss reporting on incidents that could have had the potential to cause harm, we also encourage positive intervention where our colleagues have helped prevent an incident, which promotes customer confidence in our employees’ attitudes to safety and the safety of others.

Whilst celebrating this 4 million hour milestone, we still face challenging situations every day and so mindful that safety is something to be taken seriously constantly… conducting dynamic risk assessments prior to undertaken a task, taking care of ourselves and each other, and remembering SSE’s golden safety licence: If it’s not safe… we don’t do it! We all get home safely.
